There is a ton of grindcore out there right now and it seems I've run into more good than bad this past year or so. Sweden's EXHALE falls firmly into the "good" category. The music on "Prototype", the band's Emetic Records debut (and second release after the 2004 "…Die Inside" demo) is not only ripping, it is varied, entertaining, and often darn catchy. A sound mix that brings out the edge in the riffing and a woofer-busting kick drum attack constitute the icing on the cake.

Stylistically, many won't be surprised that the core sound borrows from NASUM, but more so in the screaming side of Ulf's vocals and the moments of full on blasting. The strength of "Prototype" is found in the band's skill at developing a song, making it interesting for the listener and offering enough of an identity to give him/her a reason to come back for more. Songs like "Decapitate", "Die Inside" and "Selfdenial" are raging and fairly tuneful. The alternating screams and death growls are perfectly executed, making the songs that much more memorable. Mixing Swedish and English lyrics add flavor as well.

There are plenty of opportunities here to enjoy a case of whiplash too, especially when the band stops on a dime and quickly slams into a hard-ass groove. "Humans Own Defeat" is a great example of the group's knack for rattling a few screws loose with up-tempo grindcore bursts and then slamming into a groove that's akin to being grabbed by the throat and thrown to the ground. Gurra's drumming is far from machine-like, his playing full of feeling and his ability to move from eight-armed insanity to in-the-pocket (if ever so briefly) toughness is very well done. The guy's percussive style on "Hatet" is the song's X factor, the textured approach giving the tune a big groovy boot in the ass.

I had no expectation or preconceived notion about EXHALE's "Prototype" and came away rather impressed and thoroughly satisfied. It is obvious that the band puts a lot of work into its arrangements. This isn't to say that "Prototype" is some kind of cutting edge experiment in grindcore; it's just a damn solid grindcore album that will keep your interest the entire way.

Suppose a couple of fellows from obscure Swedish black metallers Crimson Moonlight got together with another Swede from fellow Swedish and defunct death mongers Sordid and paid homage to Nasum. Would it be any good? Well, based on both Crimson Moonlight 's average discography and Sordid’s limited offerings, you’d think not, but in fact Prototype ends up being one of those surprise albums you uncover with no expectations at all and ends up blowing you away.

The Nasum reference, while a vast categorical starting point for Exhale’s (Inhale/Exhale?) grindcore/death metal melee is appropriate in part to the dual growled/screamed vocals, samples, short song titles (some in Swedish), midrange guitar tone and rampant vitriolic grindcore expulsions. Except Exhale’s songs are a little longer and have a little more death metal groove and restraint in small doses and the deep vocals of Johann Y (Sordid) are waaaaaaaay deep, like early Carcass or John Gallagher (Dying Fetus) deep. Still, structurally, Exhale deliver 14 tightly wound, blast-beat fueled bursts of what is at its base level surprisingly good Nasum-ish styled grindcore.

Those familiar with Nasum will instantly recognize short violent, power chord/blastbeat driven salvos like “Besviken Igen”, “Stangda Dorrar”, “It”, “Voices” and “Bussen Till Helvetet pt.2”, but less ADD driven listeners will appreciate tracks like “Decapitate”, “Hatet”, “Humans Own Defeat”, and “Lie” as they have a little more variety and pacing amid the caustic grindage, including some very hefty grooves ("Decapitate", “Defy”, “Die Inside”, “Self Denial”, “Reflections”), and if hefty grooves are your thing the short but mammoth segue track “Bussen Till Helvetet pt.1” will shake your foundation. The production is hefty and clear with a perfect mix of low-end rumble and razor sharp mid range guitars. My only beef would be the slightly programmed (though not programmed, just over produced) sounding drums.

With so much big name and big label grindcore to choose from (The Berzerker, Kill the Client, Napalm Death, Squash Bowels, Antigama, JaKa, etc) it would be easy to over look this rather under the radar release, but Exhale end up delivering a top notch grindcore surprise that will please all fans of down-tuned extremity.

Good old fashioned high quality grindcore. First off, don't expect a big departure from their earlier EP, this cd contains those 3 songs re-recorded and the other new tracks fit right in. The production has gone up a notch, it's definitely less muffled and more in your face. If there was anything to suggest it would be maybe a few more overdubs or something on a future cd to thicken the sound up a bit. But as it is, it's very raw and angry. Great drumming, good riffs, medium length songs and tons of energy to keep your ears locked to your headphones. With Nasum's "Grind Finale" coming out this same week, you'd think this would be a bad time to release a grindcore album, but no, this cd is definitely worth the cash and more, so don't overlook it, you'll be sorry if you do.

Yes, yes....yes...this is the right soundtrack for a f**cked up day...this album is pain relief in it´s purest form. Exhale is pure violent Grind...and these guys must really sold their soul to this genre, cause their music is technical, fast as hell and damn groovy. I guess besides Nasum the best Grind band I heard from Sweden so far. I like it fast and so I really fell in love with this album. At times I really was afraid that the guys of Exhale loose their groove in some songs, but there is no need to be afraid, these guys breathe extreme music and so they know how to play fast. Screams, crawls, speed and a powerful recording...this album has everything a Grind album needs in 2006 included the dirt and filth Grind should have. If you like Carcass, Misery Index and Nasum...this is a must-buy for you...highly recommended!!!

Crusty grind with death metal growls and sweeping guitars is the consistent theme throughout “Prototype”. You’ll fall into a deep nightmarish coma if you aren’t careful when listening to Exhale (swe). The drumming will leave you crippled beyond repair while the vocals are set to rip you from limb to limb with their screams and guttural growls. Beastly!

Wahrlich erst mal tief ausatmen bzw. durchatmen muss man nach dem Genuss dieses Silberlings der Schweden EXHALE. Die 14 Tracks der Scheiblette bietet reichlich Kraftfutter für alle NASUM Jünger da draußen, denn das Quartett aus Jönköping schippert mächtig verdächtig in ähnlichen Gewässern wie ihre bekannten Landsmänner. EXHALE ist die Zweitband von SORDID Member Johan, der sich hier für die Klampfe und die tiefen Vokills bei der Truppe verantwortlich zeichnet. Wer das SORDID Debüt kennt weiß, das dann auch selbstverfreilich Qualität angesagt ist. Und in der Tat kann der Vierer mit seiner heftigen Death/Grind Mischung überzeugen. Die Songs dröhnen fett und brutal aus den Boxen und besitzen alle Trademarks, die man bei so einer Scheibe erwartet. Ordentlich Speed, brutale, schwere mittelschnelle Parts, Grooves und duale Vokals bei der sich in bekannter Manier tiefe Growls mit hysterischen Kreischgesang ein Stelldichein geben. Das Album wurde mit einer vorzüglichen Produktion versehen, welche die wuchtigen Kompositionen so richtig schon derbe aus dem heimischen Lautsprechern schmettern lässt. Eine richtig nette Scheibe, bei der man endlich wieder mal die Zecken aus der Matte schütteln kann. Macht Laune!

Death-Metal und/oder Grindcore aus Schweden ist bekannt und dem entsprechend nichts Neues. Exhale hingegen sind eher unbekannt in der Szene, was nicht weiter verwundert, da die Band aus Jönköping nach einem Demo aus dem Jahre 2004 nun ihren ersten Longplayer auf die Menschheit loslassen. Unter Vertrag genommen wurden die Schweden vom amerikanischen Label Emetic Records, das seinerseits auch noch keinen großen Bekanntheitsgrad haben dürfte. Dafür spricht jedenfalls die Artikelnummer der CD (EME20).

Die Wurzeln der Band lassen sich am ehesten Nasum oder den alten Carcass zuordnen, nur dass bei Exhale ein wenig mehr Death-Metal zu finden ist. So wird von Beginn an die Keule geschwungen, um jeden, der sich im näheren Dunstkreis aufhält, gnadenlos niederzustrecken. Ein wahres Trommelfeuer aus allen verfügbaren Rohren schlägt rechts und links neben dem Hörer ein. Ein Entrinnen gibt es hier nicht und die Zeit einen Bunker zu bauen hat man eben nicht. Also heißt es Tarnnetz überwerfen und ausharren. Die Gitarren schiessen scharfe Salven und werden von einer unerbittlichen Artillerie in Form von tiefen Tönen unterstützt. Hinter all dem herrscht das Drumming, das die ganze Maschinerie in Gang hält und es schlicht verbietet Pausen zu machen. Und passend zu diesem Szenario vernimmt man das Röcheln und Schreien des Todes, das in wunderbarer Weise von Sänger Ulf in Szene gesetzt wird. Die Songs sind abwechselnd in Englisch und Schwedisch gehalten. Letzteres ist eh nicht weiter schlimm, da man beim Hören so oder so nie die Chance hat etwas zu verstehen. Eine fette Produktion unterstreicht die ambitionierte Einstellung von Exhale. Klare Strukturen im Sound sorgen jederzeit dafür, dass man den Spass an der Front nicht verliert. Auch haben alle Stücke ein ähnlich hohes Niveau. Es gibt kaum Ausreißer, wenn überhaupt die drei Songs, die vom 2004er Demo mit auf dem Album gelandet sind (''Reflections'', ''Decapitate'' und ''Die Inside''). Diese sind zwar nicht schlechter, fallen aber durch eine andere Struktur im Gegensatz zu den Anderen auf.

Nachdem Nasum gezwungenermaßen das Ende eingeläutet haben, steht mit Exhale ein Nachfolger in den Startlöchern bereit. Nie hat man den Verdacht, dass es sich bei der Band um ein Plagiat handeln könnte, dafür ist der Death-Anteil auch zu hoch. Dass ''Prototype'' zudem zeitgleich mit Nasums Best of auf den Markt kommt, könnte man schon fast als Wink bezeichnen. Wer auf diese Art Death/Grind steht, sollte dieses Werk nicht übersehen, denn ''Prototype'' ist jede Eurone wert!

Ruotsalaisen Exhalen debyyttialbumi Prototype voisi hyvin olla vastine kotimaamme omalle grindi-ihme Rotten Soundille. Erojakin toki löytyy, mutta yhteistä kummallekin on raivokkaan raskas ja vivahderikas deathgrind, joka pieksee kilpailijat paitsi osaavalla soitannallaan, myös a-luokan toteutuksellaan.

Yksitoikkoista pieksentää Exhale rikkoo paitsi hitaammilla kohdilla, myös lyhyillä sample-pätkillä sekä lainaamalla ideoita niin puhtaan death metalin saralta kuin hardcorestakin. Tuloksena on hyvin ja tiiviisti yhteen nivottu paketti ankaraa ja kiivasta murskausta. Vaikka Exhale ei paistattelekaan omaperäisyyden valossa, se tekee laadukkaasti ja taidolla sen mitä yrittääkin. Kun vielä biisit pidetään minuutin ja maksimissaankin alle neljän mittaisina, ei tylsyys pääse iskemään, vaan levy soi helposti läpi kuuntelijaa tympäisemättä.

Tuotantoseikat pitävät huolen siitä, että aivan undergroundeinta grindiyleisöä levy ei suoranaisesti kosiskele. Soundimaailma on hiottu, selkeä ja puhtoinen, muttei muovinen tai liioitellun steriili. Rummuista löytyy ehtaa potkua ja yleisesti soundit ovat muutoinkin todella hyvät. Kitaroista ja bassosta löytyy miellyttävää rouheutta ja matalan örinälaulun lisäksi kuullaan genreen hyvin istuvaa rääkylaulua. Etenkin örinäpuoli hoituu erinomaisesti, mutta lienee makuasia mistä tyylistä eniten pitää.

Prototypessä ei varsinaisesti viehätä niinkään mikään erikoisuus tai uudet elementit, vaan tasavarma osaaminen ja kauttaaltaan raskas ulosanti. Jos modernimman kuuloiset grindiaktit kuten Nasum tai jo edellä mainittu Rotten Sound kiehtovat, on ruattalaisten oma Exhale ehdottomasti tsekkaamisen arvoinen tapaus.
